Tourist Route: Discovering the Hauts-de-Seine

Step 4: Historical Museum of the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud

Located on the edge of the park, the Historical Museum of the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud brings a long-lost château back to life. Models, paintings, and architectural fragments recreate the splendor of a princely and later imperial residence, set amidst terraced gardens overlooking Paris and the Seine.

1-hour tour, free admission

Located at the entrance of the Grille d’Honneur in the estate's former stables, the Historical Museum tells the story of the Saint-Cloud park and its long-lost château. Models, plans, paintings, and archival documents help recreate the appearance of this princely and later imperial residence, of which only ruins remain.

The château was at the heart of major episodes in French history, particularly during the reigns of Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette, and later during the Napoleonic era: Bonaparte seized power here during the 18 Brumaire coup d'état, and the Empire was proclaimed within its walls. The fire of 1870 and the subsequent demolition of the ruins have made the museum an essential place for understanding this vanished past.

In harmony with the park and its terraced gardens, the tour invites visitors to imagine the scale, decor, and court life that once animated Saint-Cloud, while showcasing the sculptures, architectural fragments, and objects saved from the former palace.
