Step 3: The Château d’Auvers

Overlooking the Oise Valley, the Château d’Auvers offers an immersive journey into the heart of Impressionism. A scenographic tour, terraced gardens, and views of the village tell the story of how painters, from Daubigny to Van Gogh, transformed these ordinary landscapes into true works of light and color.

Built in 1635 by a wealthy Italian financier close to Marie de' Medici, the Château d'Auvers-sur-Oise was immortalized in 1890 by Van Gogh in his painting The Château at Auvers at Sunset. Behind its classical-style facades, the building recreates the Impressionist era in an educational and captivating way through a new multimedia tour: "Vision Impressionniste, naissance et descendance" (Impressionist Vision, Birth and Legacy). This immersive and sensory experience invites you to dive into the history of the artistic movement, from its inspirations to its influence on movements such as Cubism.

Centered around art and the effervescent atmosphere of the time, the eight sequences of this tour feature video and sound projections, filled with testimonials from the great Impressionist names (Cézanne, Pissarro, Monet) and their successors (Van Gogh, Gauguin, Seurat…).

Afterward, take a walk outside and admire the building, the park, and its Italian-style gardens. In fine weather, enjoy the belvedere overlooking the village. Before you leave, grab a table at "Le Nymphée" restaurant, whose terrace is very popular in the summer.
