The Forest, A Different Way
Welcome to the Rilly-la-Montagne communal forest, a natural environment home to numerous ponds. This network of ponds serves as a reservoir for rare biodiversity. Each pond is unique, allowing it to support a distinct range of life.
Water in the Montagne de Reims
The Montagne de Reims overlooks the Champagne plains. Its varied landscapes, defined by the trilogy of forest, vineyards, and farmland, give the Regional Natural Park its unique identity. The specific geology of the Montagne de Reims and its clay soil allow for the formation of "perched water tables." These are underground aquifers located at a higher elevation than the Vesle and Marne rivers that flow through the plain. This helps feed these waterways, ensuring a sufficient water supply for human needs. The local economy depends on this supply (for agriculture, viticulture, and industrial activities, for example). This is why the Montagne de Reims is considered a natural water tower for the region and neighboring towns.
The Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park
A Regional Natural Park is an inhabited rural area recognized by the State for its remarkable heritage, which requires careful balance. Daily efforts are made to protect and promote the natural, cultural, and landscape heritage of the Montagne de Reims. Rilly-la-Montagne is an iconic wine-growing village in the Montagne de Reims. It has been studied for many years by scientists for its historical and natural richness, both geological and biological. Aware of this wealth, the municipality is committed to preserving and enhancing its environment. This is why the Joint Association of the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park has supported the municipality of Rilly-la-Montagne in restoring this exceptional natural site you are about to enter.
